What is photovoltaics (solar electricity) or "PV"?

What do we mean by photovoltaics? The word itself helps to explain how photovoltaic (PV) or solar electric technologies work. First used in about 1890, the word has two parts: photo, a stem derived from the Greek phos, which means light, and volt, a measurement unit named for Alessandro Volta (1745-1827), a pioneer in the study of electricity. So, photovoltaics could literally be translated as light-electricity. And that's just what photovoltaic materials and devices do; they convert light energy to electricity, as Edmond Becquerel and others discovered in the 18th Century.

How do photovoltaics work?

Here's a short answer: Sunlight on photovoltaic modules produces direct current (DC) electricity which is converted to alternating current (AC) by a device called an inverter, which is then wired into your main service panel where it feeds your internal power grid.

What is Solar Energy/Solar Power?

Radiant light or energy emitted by the sun.

What are the financial benefits of solar energy?

When a solar energy system is on your property, you save money on your electricity bills and protect yourself against rising electricity rates in the future. How much you save is dependent on the utility rates and solar regulations in your country, none the less, having solar is a smart investment no matter where you live.

How do I find out how much I pay for electricity?

The easiest way to find out how much you pay for electricity is to take a look at your Lucelec bill under the section Billing Details. Also to know how much electricity you use per month, look for the section titled Monthly Usage (kWh).

Do solar panels work when the sun doesn’t shine?

The amount of power your solar can generate is dependent on sunlight. So, your solar panels will produce slightly less energy when the weather is cloudy, and no energy at night. However, because of high electricity costs and financial incentives, going solar is a smart decision.

Will I still receive an electric bill if I have solar panels?

Yes, you will still receive a bill from Lucelec unless you are fully off the grid, and you have battery storage. Nevertheless, you can dramatically reduce your bill, or even cut the amount you owe to $0, with a solar panel system that matches your energy use.

What size solar energy system should I get?

The size of your solar energy system will depend on how much electricity you use on a monthly basis. Take a look at your past electricity bills and call Sol-lucian for a free quote to determine the size system that will suit your needs.
